Life can be a whirlwind of responsibilities, deadlines, and unexpected curveballs. It’s no surprise that so many of us feel stressed out and overwhelmed.
Unfortunately, unmanaged stress can significantly impact your overall health and well-being–and not just your mental health, either. Chronic stress can lead to headaches, muscle tension, cardiovascular issues, and much more.
But what if managing stress didn’t have to feel like another thing on your to-do list? Incorporating stress management into your daily routine can make a big difference in your health and mood.
Five of Our Favorite Tips for Keeping Stress at Bay
1. Try Box Breathing
Box breathing is a quick and effective technique to calm your mind and reduce stress. It signals your body to relax, making it easier to handle whatever comes your way. Here’s how to do it:
- Sit comfortably and close your eyes.
- Count to four as you inhale deeply through your nose.
- Release your breath for a count of four.
- Repeat as needed.
2. Practice Mindfulness
Mindfulness helps reduce stress by bringing your attention to the present moment. It lets you focus on what’s happening now rather than worrying about the future. What this looks like can vary. Here are some suggestions to get you started:
- Take a moment to pay attention to your surroundings. No matter where you are, notice the sights, sounds, and smells around you.
- Practice body awareness by focusing on the different sensations in your body at a given moment. You can also try a body scan by bringing awareness to your feet and then slowly working your way upward.
- Keep a gratitude journal to help you remember those small things you’re grateful for.
3. Move Regularly
Exercise is one of the best natural stress relievers. Physical activity releases endorphins, your brain’s “feel-good” chemicals, making it easier to manage daily stress. Even better? You don’t have to spend hours at the gym to reap the benefits of exercise. Here are some easier ways to get more movement in:
- Go for a walk! This is one of the simplest ways to exercise; even a 10-minute stroll can help clear your mind.
- Follow along with a stretching or Yoga video
- Throw on your favorite music and start dancing.
4. Get Organized
One of the most common causes of stress stems from feeling overwhelmed by everything that needs to be done in a day. Experiment with different organizational methods to find one that works for you. Here are some ideas to get you started:
- Buy a pretty planner or notebook to keep track of your schedule, important dates, key tasks, and so on.
- Break big projects into smaller, manageable steps.
- If daily to-do lists feel overwhelming, consider writing weekly or even monthly lists instead.
5. Stay Connected
Human beings are social creatures, and it’s vital that you find time to connect with friends and loved ones. Talking to someone you trust can help you manage stress by sharing your thoughts and getting support. Feeling isolated? Here are some suggestions to help you feel more connected:
- Call or text a friend or family member. Sometimes, a quick chat is all you need to lift your spirits.
- Join a social group where you can get out and interact with others.
- Feeling really overwhelmed? Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.
